I haven't updated this blog since Christmas because life has been somewhat unpleasant. I won't go into loads of detail but quite a few of my elderly relatives died in a short time. I've spent quite a lot of time visiting hospitals, running people around, doing errands, arranging "social care" and what not. It has been very difficult do all this and run a bead making business at the same time.

Being self employed is a double edged sword - I have the flexibility to be able to drop things and go and help, which is good, of course. But then, the very fact that my work life is flexible means that I'm the first port of call in an emergency, so I end up getting very little done. So, apologies to everyone if I have been a little tardy in getting back to you with emails - they seem to be the main thing that suffers. If you never received a response to something - I apologise - I haven't been intentionally ignorant, but I hope you can appreciate that I've been a little tied up of late.

I'm back (in red!)

They say that things go in threes - well, I hope that I've had my three for a while. I feel that today is the time to turn a new page and concentrate on Life again. So, just to let you know what I'm currently up to.

Well, even though my personal life was not good, professionally I've been flying high. I was astonished and honoured to win Beads and Beyond Magazine "Jewellery Maker of the Year (Lampworking section)" and of course I was pleased as punch to make it to the front cover of the April Edition:

"Blossoming Out" takes the Cover Page!

I also included a tutorial on making the Blossom Beads in this issue for all budding beadmakers out there - Hope you all had a go at them?

I've also been featured in one of our local newspapers - The Leicester Mercury. If you'd like to see what it's like spending a day with me making beads just click here.

Redhotsal at St Ives

I'm also gearing up to spending the Easter at Redhotsal in St Ives. This will be our second season in the shop in Cornwall. We will be open on Saturday April 16th and will stay open until midday Saturday 30th April. Shop opening times are 10:00am and we close around 5:00pm (sometimes later) seven days a week.

Do come and see me in the shop - I have a complete bead making facility so you can watch the beads being made in front of your very eyes. This also enables me to offer a bespoke service should you wish to order something special and unique on your holiday.

We will be returning to the midlands after 30th April for a little while but I am pleased to say that Adam will be back at the shop a week or so later and the shop will reopen again on the 14th April until September. Unfortunately - I won't be there until 16th July for demonstrations but the shop will be open for business from April 14th until the end of summer. We look forward to seeing you!

St Ives - View from the Habour

Turkish Glass Festival

Also - I'm shortly off to Turkey. No, not for a holiday - I'm teaching bead making at the Denizli Glass Cam Festival. I'm getting really excited about this now - it seemed to be a long way into the future at the start of the year - but I go in a few weeks time. The Festival runs from 6-8th May in Denizli, Turkey. I'm mentioned alongside such illustrious names such as Julie-Anne Denton and Lucio Bubbaco - hard to believe it! I'll be gone from 3rd May until 10th May and won't be able to respond to email during this time.

Click here to see the Festival Website

Teaching

Because of everything going on my dates for teaching are now very limited. I have no availibility between now until May 10th. I will only then be teaching from May 10th until the start of July. If you wish to book a lesson please get in touch with me as soon as possible as there will be very limited availability until September 2011. I do not teach at the shop in Cornwall.

For bead makers who already have a little experience I am teaching a special one day Intermediate Lesson with Diana East at Studio 19 in Enderby, Leicestershire. I think this will be on May 15th (Saturday) and Di is offering it at a super cheap rate - so if you want to book on this one I would get in touch with Di or telephone 0116 2867664. Please note that Di East will be taking bookings for this course - so please get in touch directly with her rather than me.

Anything Else?

Um, well, I think that's all for now. I'll try and check in a little more often with the Blogging. But I'm not very good at it - although I will be sure to post up lots of pictures of Cornwall and Turkey, of course. Thanks for looking - take care one and all.

Sal x

And the winner is.......

A little delayed due to not getting home because of the inclement weather - but better late than never.

The winner of the Prize Draw is.......

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; Adam was already in St Ives as he was shopping fitting for a couple of weeks. pick up. And before we knew what was happening we had customers and everything! (No pics of actual customers - you'll just have to believe me on this :) )

So, we have been open seven days a week from the middle of July to now. Unfortunately, it doesn't leave a lot of time to do things like this:

Sculpting the sand

Surfing the tubes....

Well, Emily had lots of time - but I only got to paddle once!

Home Sweet Home was a caravan at Hellesveor Farm. It was quite a jaunt up the Stennack every day, going to work was easy, with a lovely view down the hill:

St Ives from the Stennack

Returning home was a little more arduous. You'd have thought that with all this walking I'd have lost a bit of weight - unfortunately, a high pasty intake counterbalanced this daily hill walking with the net result of a stone weight gain. Bahhhhh! Look at these poor souls - too tired to make it up the mountain.

"Are we there yet?"

The caravan was....small. And a little......damp. But we got to see the cows going by every day.

Milking Time

Life at the shop is pretty grand. I loved it. We have a beadmaking area in the shop and people are able to come and watch their beads being made. We also have a bespoke service, which proved very popular. Children in particular found lampworking extremely absorbing. One little girl was so taken with watching that she managed to lose her parents. That was a little tricky, since she only spoke German and I only spoke English. Luckily her parents finally claimed her before I put her to work in the shop. Heh!

I can't believe how quickly the summer went. Emily and I came back at the weekend as it was the first day of term today, but we've left Adam down in Cornwall to run the shop throughout September so do please pay him a visit if you are in St Ives.

We are in Cyril Noall Square, which is next to Kowabungas Internet Cafe. A handy place to herd members of the family who aren't bead-obsessed, thus giving you ample time to browse!

Hope you like our stock:

"Beachy" Pendants

I'm currently in the process of putting all the jewellery onto my website: www.redhotsal.co.uk so if you didn't get a chance to get to St Ives you can still buy online. I'm hoping to have everything up there in a week or so's time.

The shop will be open until the end of September and then we will return for Half Term week in October (16th-23rd). Hope to see you there and thanks for all your wonderful support over the last few weeks! And yes, there will be beads for sale on the website in the next few days!!!!

Sal xx

Redhotsal..........At the Seaside!

Well, I'm so excited. I've been planning this for a long long time and now it's finally about to become a reality....I've gone and bought a shop to sell my lampwork jewellery in!

Where is this shop?

Somewhere in the town?

Nope, it's in St Ives, Cornwall!

The Harbour - St Ives

As a lot of you already know - I don't live in Cornwall - I live in Leicestershire, so what on earth am I doing? Well, it's a long story - but one day we hope to retire to Cornwall, so we thought we'd make a start by buying a shop there. We're going to see if the UK is ready for a lampwork glass bead jewellery shop by running "Redhotsal at St Ives" for the summer period July 17th until the end of August.

If you happen to be in Cornwall during this time please look us up. We will be located in Cyril Noall Square (Just off Fore Street) in St Ives.

Of course this does mean that I won't be around in the Leicestershire studio for this period so I WON'T be teaching or taking any custom orders. I WILL however, be making beads as normal as the shop has a bead making area, so you will still be able to buy beads as normal via the website. You'll be able to see me making beads in the shop throughout this time. At the end of August we will be back in Leicestershire for business as normal.

Am I a little nuts to be doing this? Most probably.....am I excited? You betcha! I'll try and keep you updated of progress on here or my website so please stay tuned.....

In the meantime, I'm having an Open Day this weekend on Saturday 19th June to celebrate the shop and to generally just muck about with glass. I'd be delighted if you would like to come over. You don't have to be a bead maker - I have a three torch studio and I will be around to show people how to make beads and to generally play with hot glass. For the sake of knowing numbers I would be grateful if you would just email me first to let me know you're coming. Open day runs from 10:30 - 4.00pm.

I'm still alive...gloom, doom and a glimmer of sunshine.

Well, it's been a long time since I blogged - not because I've forgotten about my Blog - (and I really didn't want to be one of those people who set up a blog and then never blogged again!) It's just that so much has been happening in my life but I've not really wanted to share it with the wwworld. Still, a lot of you have been asking why I've been so quiet - so here's a potted history of the last couple of months.

Firstly a lot of bad stuff - my aunt sadly died last week. Although it wasn't unexpected it still was quite a shock. I've been busy helping my uncle (who is in his eighties) sort things out for the funeral and so on. It's been tough.

Previous to this my mum had a fall and broke her wrist so I've been helping out there, too. You just don't realise how much you rely on your hands until they're not in use. So, this combined with the Easter holidays has been rather detrimental on my work output. I wonder whether I should stop being a bead maker and start up my own care company!

Then - in reply to those of you who have asked me - I won't be at the Flame Off this year. I'm sorry for my absence but there was something I felt rather strongly about and I'd rather stick to my principles than make a quick dollar by selling there. Anyway - lest said and all that, but if you are going this weekend I hope you will have a great time. Don't forget to check out Di East's demo - sure to be inspiring and interesting. And make sure you see Bob Martin. He's the new star of the Making Glass Animals DVD that I will soon be selling on my website.

Next to all this bad stuff is a shining beacon of wonderful news. I'll not spill the beans yet on it as it could still turn to dust - but Adam, Emily and I have had a dream for several years. It is slowly becoming a reality and as soon as I know for sure I'll be sure to tell everyone what's happening in the next few days. Basically - it's "Coming Soon This Summer......"

In the meantime here's a picture of some beads I've just made which is a big clue to what I hope to be up to this July:

Oh....and I nearly forgot. Don't forget to check out my tutorial on vessels in this months Beads and Beyond. And look out for me in Practical Publishing's new magazine Creative Beads and Jewellery Issue 2 in April!

Ice Paradise

Hello All and Happy New Year!

I had a full day in my new Studio today and just had a fantastic session making beads.

I know that it's a bad time of the year and that people are suffering in the cold, and all of the horrible stuff that comes with the weather but honestly I looked out of my studio, which was comfortably warm (and believe me, that's a first for me!) and just thought "what a beautiful scene outside":

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; We had a great time - and the weather was probably a lot better there than most other parts of the country, as you can see from the photos. Not quite the weather for sunbathing though! Apologies if I was a little slow in getting back to you if you emailed. We did have internet access but my internet dongle was so s-l-o-w. I suppose tonnes of granite cutting out the phone signals didn't help.
Anyway - it's business as usual for a few days and then it's CHRISTMAS!!!
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has followed this and my website and to all my customers. Look out for an end of year sale just after Christmas on beads and jewellery and also - I hope to have the new DVDs available then too.
Hope you all have a very happy and peaceful Christmas!

Emily flaked out on the Island

Ad and Emily making a dam

Em loves the beach

Tide is out

It's nearly done!

Crikey, if I'd have known how much blimmin' work it was to have redone my website I wouldn't have done it at all. I put loads of goodies in the shop and they should now be in a sensible order.
Please check it out and let me know what you think.

Redhotsal's Website

DVDs - They're on their way - almost done!

Shed - Well, I'm in it and I have enjoyed a couple of sessions already despite still not being properly wired up. It was a collosal Victorian factory built in the hey day of the hosiery and textile industry, which was what the town of Hinckley was famous for. I was always a little scared walking past the facade of the building - I thought that the big dust extractor vents would fall down and squash me so I used to hurry past them as quickly as possible. The journey to school was rife with near fatal squashing incidents - looking back, as I used to hurry under the railway bridge too, especially if a train was going over, just in case that too would fall down and squash me flat. Hmmm.....

Well, anyway, Sketchleys was a massive textile dye works and later on dry cleaners (Sketchleys - we know the meaning of cleaning - remember?) and was a major local employer.

When I left Hinckley in 1982 to go to the bright lights (and University) of London it was still a major employer - but over the years as the hosiery factories gradually started to lose out to cheap imported clothes, the working part of Sketchleys became smaller and smaller and most of the factory was left empty.

I've just found a great link to how Sketchleys looked - http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=39712

Over the last five years when I came back to Hinckley, Sketchleys was practically deserted and about two years ago they even stopped trying to do basic repairs like guttering and so on. Thieves had stripped a lot of lead from the roofs and it was starting to look a mess.

A few weeks ago I noticed that you could see daylight though the windows of the factory. They had been demolishing the building from behind for literally weeks. Only the Victorian brick facade remained and about a week or so ago even that finally went. Just look at it now:

Unbelieveable isn't it? The huge chimneys are still up but they're due to go in the next couple of days - I don't know what they are planning for the boiler house, but it'll be gone soon, I would think.

I think they're strange - the people of this town. They're not like the coal miners or the ship builders - no one went around beating their chests moaning about how their jobs were being taken away. They just quietly got laid off, retired, or found other things to do and industry just slid away here, without even a murmur and the amount of industry lost here in the midlands - if you include the motor industry - was far in away higher than the miners or the steel workers and possibly even the ship builders. So, it's not surprising then, that I'm the only one taking pictures of this end of an era. No one else bothers - it's just another factory. They're more interested to see if a new Tesco is about to spring up. God help us all.

Phew. Have a few technical issues with both of course, but that's how life is.

Wasn't really able to do much about either over the weekend as I was teaching on Friday and Saturday. But today we started to move out of the tin shed and into the new studio. God, I've got a lot of glass. In fact, God, I've got a lot of glass I won't ever use - mustard and yellow for example. Rakes of the stuff. Whatever made me think that I needed so much when I bought it? Well, When it's out sorted out into the new racks I'll post up a photo but it got so dark and so cold this afternoon that I abandoned the glass sorting for a nice warm seat by the computer.

The new website isn't so straightforward. Until my website is "pointing" to the new host I can't make any progress. If you log on to redhotsal.co.uk or sallycarver.co.uk you'll get the old website. If you log onto lampworkbeads.co.uk who knows what will happen!? Keep watching for new developments!

Finally the DVDs are still being edited. It never does, does it?

I'm taking a five minute "timeout" from my new website. Well, I laughingly call it a new website, seeings as it doesn't yet exist.

I have my old website with Compila (nice but ubergeeky). I have bought a new website courtesy Mr Site (yes, I'm missing out the "h" because I want to give them a chance this time). Unfortunately me and Mr Site have gotten off to a bad start already. As I already have my domain name I want to move it across to Mr Site but I don't want to move it until the nice shiny new site is ready to go. So, while I build it I've kept the old site in place.

However, until I physically redirect the site Mr Site has nowhere to host any of the pictures I upload. This means that you can't actually see any of the pictures as you try to build your graphics-heavy website. Are you with me so far? This makes building your Mr S*ite website next to impossible.

When I phoned them up (at 20p per minute) they were less than helpful. "Surely," I said "this exact same problem must happen to a LOT of other people in the same position?" No, apparently I'm the only person in the whole world that this has happened to.

When I phoned Compila (free, but there's a reason for that) - they hadn't even heard of Mr Site. Go figure.

Pah.....I don't expect to have to know how a blinking car works in order to drive it - why do I have to know how a flipping cpanel operates in order to use it? Grumble.......moan.....gnashing of teeth..........

All Sold - Thank you all!

Wow - well this is just a quickie really to say thanks to everyone for buying beads tonight. We were meeting up with my good friend Dora from Singapore at Waterloo Station, under the big clock naturally.

We were early so we had a look round Waterloo. Check out this subway. I've never seen so much grafitti. It's probably full of tags telling us we were about to get mugged or worse, but I'm still here to tell the tale:

Next stop was the London Eye. But it was so wet and cold that we didn't get the best view of London!

Dora, Emily and Me

Big Ben in the rain

Lunch was at Won Keis and then we had a wander. I really liked the Christmas Decorations of Carnaby Street:

Finally we ended up at Swarovskis. Wow what a shop. There seem to be two shops - one with the usual Swarovski stuff and a Swarovski Crystallized shop which sells just the crystals. In the latter, there's an upstairs bit which is a gallery and also there is a dining area. We were the only people up there. I somehow don't think we should have been there but oddly we weren't thrown out. We lounged on the Swarovski-clad couch (O.M.G.) and Emily went to the poshest toilet in Regent Street. There were crystals on the loo roll holder. We were rather bedraggled and wet but no one came to shoo us away Weird.

Anyway - a great day out so I thought I'd share.

Adam in Swarovski Land

Something Big is about to happen......

Well, I've had my website going for over five years now. It was originally designed by my work mate Gary Munro, who originally made a decent job of it. When I stopped working at Light Impressions and so moved up to the midlands it was out of Gary's capable hands and over the years I have butchered the website into an unspeakable mess.

Designed originally Go Live, redesigned in Dream Weaver, taken back to Go Live (don't ask) it now drops a load of HTML code every time I touch it, so I dutifully have to paste it back in every time I touch the site. Seriously it's shocking.

Anyway - I've taken the plunge and gone for a huge new redesign. I want to work on it now but I have to do other things this weekend. But look out - I'm determined to have this new website up and running by the end of next week latest.

And I'm going to do a giveaway competition as a celebration, so make sure you stay tuned and don't miss out.

Shed news - the electrician has been in for a quote and Adam has just gone out to B&Qs for the third extraction unit. Having filmed everything last week I have hours and hours of footage. Now comes the difficult bit - which is getting everything into a sensible and logical order. The original idea was to do just two DVDs - A beyond the Basics and an Advanced Techniques but there may be more!
Anyway - to whet your appetites have a look at this:

These are all the beads I made during the video shoot - so if you look closely you'll get an idea of what I'll cover during the vids. That's a lot of beads! Only problem now is to get them off the mandrels and all cleaned up for the still shots. Hmmph....I hate cleaning beads. Still, this won't get htem done so I'd better slope off and make a start!

Friday Bead Making

Well, so much for a while day in the shed. It's now 12:30 and I still haven't finished all the admin. I still have to lug the kiln back into the shed after using it during the filming of the new Bead Making DVDs. It's been a funny old week - both doing the new DVDs and having my mother's and Emily's birthday it's always a bit of a hectic time in the Carver household.

Still, at least Adam is getting stuff done - new photos of the almost finished *NEW AND SHINY* shed will follow soon.

Anyway- I'm blogging while waiting for a very image-heavy email to post - astonishingly it looks like it might be about to finish. The email gods are being kind. Right - I'm ignoring that huge stack of paperwork and I'm off to the shed.
